Dentures are durable and effective teeth replacements. However, even the most reliable dental devices may start to fit differently over time. This may be caused by changes in the jaw or something as simple as everyday wear and tear. Fortunately, we can reline dentures so that they feel like new again.

What is a denture reline?

Relining is a process in which a dentist adjusts dentures to fit more securely. They will check how the dentures fit in the mouth, such as how they sit on the gums, and then add material for a more comfortable fit. Thus, relining dentures essentially means refitting them. Dentists may also make minor repairs to dentures during a reline, such as fixing broken components.

Benefits

The primary benefit of relining is that the patient will not need to purchase a completely new set of dentures to experience improved chewing function, ease of use, and comfort again. Better yet, it is possible to make minor adjustments right in the dentist’s office. Please note that more comprehensive relines must be completed in a dental lab.

Another benefit is that relines help address health problems caused by ill-fitting dentures, like gum irritation and oral sores. Further, patients do not have to wait to experience these symptoms before they can reline their dentures. To prevent these oral health issues, see a dentist for a reline as soon as the dentures start to feel loose or cause discomfort.

When denture relines are recommended

Most patients should reline their dentures about every one or two years. Since dentures do not stimulate the jawbone, it is normal for jawbone changes to occur over time. This change can turn a snug pair of dentures into an ill-fitting one. Damage to the denture, including improper care, can alter how it fits. That said, even the most well-maintained dentures are susceptible to damage from general wear and tear.

Types of denture relines

There are two ways to reline dentures with a hard reline and a soft reline. Hard relines refit dentures using acrylic resin, which is similar to the material the rest of the denture contains. The results of these relines can last for up to five years. However, patients should consult a dentist more frequently; changes to the underlying jawbone can still cause an intact set of dentures to fit improperly.

On the other hand, soft relines use silicone resin to refit dentures. This method is preferred for patients with sensitive or thinning gums. Results last about one to two years, which is how often dentures should be refitted anyway.
